Are you struggling with pain due to manual handling and repeat tasks at work? We can help with that.
Mrs Goget is employed by a well-known retailer and major employer. Her job is to keep the shelves stocked. Largely, she works alone. Mrs Goget has been doing this job for a number of years but, more recently, her employer has been short staffed and Mrs Goget has been required to work extra hours.
The stock for the shelves is often heavy. She has to get it from storage, which involves tasks such as pulling the items from where they are stocked, pushing them onto the shop floor, reaching to height, bending down low, twisting to reach and lifting onto the shelves.
Six months ago Mrs Goget started to experience shoulder and upper back pain. She is undergoing physiotherapy.
Do you recognise Mrs Goget? Is she someone you know? Maybe she is you. Or, perhaps, you are Mr Goget – her Husband. He works on a production line, assisting in the assembly of cars. His job involves a lot of twisting to the left to pick up parts and bending to fit the parts and to check that those parts are fitted accurately. He can be in a bent position for minutes at a time, many times per day, without his job being rotated. The Company is supposed to rotate the jobs but it often does not as Mr Goget is experienced and quick at that part of the job and, anyway, a lot of the other tasks are given to workers who are on light duties.
Mr Goget has started to experience pain in his hips. He has seen a Consultant and has had a scan, which, he has been told, is showing some osteoarthritis.
Once we pass a certain age we will be carrying some degenerative changes in our body, whether we feel any symptoms from those changes or not. Sometimes, whilst our working practices may not have caused the injury from which we are suffering, if not properly monitored and risk assessed, may exacerbate, or accelerate, the condition, perhaps by a number of years.
The Manual Handling Regulations require that lifting should be avoided wherever possible. If it cannot be avoided it should be kept to a minimum.
